A Groovy Planter

A just thrown pot still on my potter's wheel

I cut it off the wheel and carved grooves down the sides

I turned it over and deepen the grooves

The pot now awaits its firing and glazing

Here it is!

Pottery for Flowers

A handmade vessel holding a flower or two can cheer up any area of a home or office — even dried flowers come to life in pottery! I think of a vase as any vessel with a narrow opening that can embrace and support fresh cut flowers or dried blooms whether it be a jug, a bottle or a small bud vase. The wider the neck opening, the bigger the bunch it can hold.

In this post I've put together an assortment of my narrow-necked vessels holding cosmos, dried flowers, twigs, wild morning glories and other natural favorites.

Bright Yellow Carved Rose Bud Bowl

Here's a low-fire earthenware bowl which I made over a decade years ago, before I used a high-fire reduction gas kiln. This piece has an intricately carved southwest design complete with a rose bud in the center. It sports a shiny yellow Amaco glaze.

See the little rose bud in the center!

Multi-Colored Carved Mosaic Bowls

Here are three of my earlier decorative pieces featuring an abundance of muted colors and busy hand-carved designs. All were made with low-fire earthenware clay and Amaco glazes.

What's It For?

A ceramic container has an endless list of possible uses other than housing a plant (which it does quite admirably). For this post on Pots In Use, I've assembled a group of my planters, bowls and open pots holding assorted items from candles to snake plants.
